Peru Rioja Family (filter)

Peru Rioja Family (filter)

The Rioja family owns La Lucuma, a 2.5-hectare farm at 1900 meters above sea level. After selectively picking only the ripest cherries of the Caturra variety, they store them overnight in sealed bags before pulping. The coffee then ferments for 30 hours after being gently washed and briefly sun-dried before further drying for 18–24 days.

At this high altitude, the Riojas have had to adapt to the challenges posed by climate change, which has led to fluctuating temperatures and more frequent droughts. In response, they have strategically planted shade trees around the crops to mitigate these risks. These trees, planted on level curves to prevent erosion, and the use of organic fertilisers, are part of their sustainable farming practices aimed at maintaining soil health.

The strategic planting of shade trees creates a fresher environment and significantly aids in water retention. Organic fertilisers enrich the soil, ensuring its long-term health and productivity.
